FOREWORD

It’s easy to write a parable.

Wait—scratch that. It’s easy to write a bad parable. It’s hard to  write a good one. And a great one? That’s fiendishly difficult.

Before I tell you that the book you hold in your hand (or gaze at on your iPad or have playing in your ear) is one of the great ones, let me tell you why.

There are three essential ingredients that go into making a parable work. The first is worthy insight. The second is clear writing. And the third . . . well, I’ll save the third for last.

For insight to be “worthy” means it has genuine worth: value that you can actually use, and will—and not only that, but when you do it will make a significant difference in your life. For that, neither information nor knowledge will do the job. Information you can get on Google; for knowledge, there’s YouTube. For a parable to be worthy, it has to bring you wisdom.

Wisdom, as opposed to mere knowledge, offers principles that are at the same time simple, practical, and timeless. Wisdom is knowledge in context; knowledge put into perspective; knowledge that has been kilned through the fires of experience.

Which brings us to Bill Cates. You can pick up the details of Bill’s c.v. and qualifications by turning to the “About the Authors” page. What I’ll say here is that I’d rather get my financial wisdom from a guy who has not only written and taught about it extensively and demonstrated it in his own business and consultancy, but who has also trekked the Andes and Himalayas, scaled the summit of Kilimanjaro, camped out in the Arctic Circle, and toured the U.S.of A. as the drummer of a rock band.

It’s the life experience thing. A.I. is never gonna give you that.

The second thing a parable needs is clear writing. Writing that is immaculately clean, concise, and compelling.

A parable is an epic in microcosm, a novel in a nutshell. In these pages, you’ll never learn what color Alden Beckett’s hair is, or who his parents were, or whether he ever had a drinking problem. Novels do that; a parable has to cut to the chase—yet do so in a way that is engaging, entertaining, even at points emotionally moving. There is a skill to that; actually, a whole set of skills.

Which brings us to Jeff C. West.

Jeff already had three home runs under his belt by the time he and Bill teamed up to write The Hidden Heist. Jeff’s first parable, written solo, won the prestigious Axiom Business Book Award’s bronze medal. His second, written with Avon superstar Lisa Wilber, took Axiom silver. And his third with my Go-Giver coauthor Bob Burg? Maybe you’ve already guessed. Yep: the gold. With each outing, Jeff’s skill set has gotten sharper and sharper . . . and with this book, even sharper.

What’s beyond gold? We’ll call it platinum.

The third thing a parable needs to work is authentic humanity.

People learn through stories, and for a story to work, it has to draw you in. If the characters are cardboard cutouts, shallow stand-ins for points the author wants to make, the story devolves into a thinly veiled PowerPoint. We need to care about these characters and what happens to them, because if we don’t resonate with their story, we don’t get drawn in and the wisdom doesn’t stick.

Even in the simplest of fables, for the thing to work, the characters have to be real. Think of Aesop’s cocksure hare and plodding tortoise. The flawed brothers of the Prodigal Son parable; the sanctimonious priest and Levite from the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Even stubborn Hem and affable Haw, the “little people” from Who Moved My Cheese?, are strikingly human and distinct from one another.

In The Hidden Heist you’ll meet and fall in love with (or at the very least, in fascination with) Alden Beckett, the man with a mysterious past who knows more than he should; Carl, whose quick temper serves to cover a deepening desperation; conflicted Bobby, who’s got a story of his own to hide; quick- witted Gabrielle, one of only three female SWAT team commanders in the Lone Star State; and a dozen others, every one as unforgettable as the last.

And have I mentioned the ingenious setting where this all takes place?

Pat Lencioni sets his parables in realistic business settings. David Bach and I opened The Latte Factor in the heart of New York City’s financial district at 9/11’s ground zero. Spencer Johnson put his two mice and two mouse-sized dudes in the heart of a maze in an undisclosed location, like a parabolic rendition.

But Bill and Jeff have done something I’d never seen before, and I’m pretty sure I’ll never see again: They’ve set their parable at the point of a gun, in a vault in the midst of a bank robbery. Jeff calls it “The Breakfast Club meets Dog Day Afternoon, only funnier.”

Its humor is undeniable—and so is its wisdom.
